Physical Description
Kingfishers lay 2 to 10 eggs but usually 3 to 6 eggs. They usually live up to15 years. They have stalky bodies, long, thick bills, and cool colors. They have awesome feather colors. They are blue, green, red, turquoise, and gold. Some have sploches, dashes, or stripes. The bill looks too long and too big for the bird but it is designed for capturing food. They have big feet and short legs.
Habitat
Kingfishers do not make their nests out of sticks and twigs. They nest in borrows that they dig into dirt banks, tree cavities, or old termite mounds. It takes about 3 to7 days to complete. There are many different varieties of bird calls they use to say, "This is my territory!"
Eating Habits
A Kingfisher watches from a perch and when it sees its prey, it swoops down and gets the insects and fish. It dives into the water and folds its arms and looks like a v. They can fit big prey in their mouths. Some like crabs, cray fish, snails, frogs, insects, spiders, reptiles, and mammals. Some even like snakes. It grabs the snake behind the head and bashes it against a branch or rock, but swallowing it is a bit tricky.
