Description
Butterflies have six legs and they also have a proboscis that is a very long tongue. Butterflies have four wings. Their wings have tiny scales and have colorful patterns on them.
Habitat
Most butterflies live near plants and flowers. Butterflies taste with their feet. Some of them fly south. Monarchs gather in flocks in states before winter comes.
Interesting Facts
Some butterflies migrate to warm places in the winter. That's why we don't see them in Minnesota in the cold months. A butterfly lays eggs on a plant. The eggs become caterpillars. The caterpillars turn into chrysalises. The chrysalises turns into butterflies. The butterflies hatch and their wings dry. The butterflies fly away however they cannot fly if it is cold. It has to stand in the sun to warm up.
