Description

Giant water bugs have sharp beaks.  They can be brown.  They have six legs, one head, a thorax and an abdomen.  They can swim underwater.  They have pinchers to grab food.

Habitat

They live in the wetlands of North America. They also live in shallow ponds, weedy ponds, and clear fresh water.  They can eat fish, tadpoles and insects.

Interesting Facts

Their life span is about a year.  They lay eggs on the males back.  They are one of the largest beetles.  They use both legs to paddle.  At night in early fall they leave shallow ponds and move to a bigger pond.
