Service Learning Projects

ALC Service Project on September 19:

Approximately 2 dozen ALC Wilson Students helped the city and, more specifically, their neighborhood on Friday, September 19. 2008. The city water works engineer came to school and gave a talk about the importance of keeping the water (particularily the Mississippi) clean. He also covered how the city water systems and waste management works, as well as the types and descriptions of jobs in his field. We then went out as a group and used stencils to paint reminders by the storm drains that whatever goes in the drains goes directly into the river. We had a fabulous time, and helped out the city and our Hester Park Neighborhood. Check out the article in that was put into the neighborhood newsletter. Check out these pictures:

Year in review...2007-2008

Check out the pictures of our year out at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud. Students had the opportunity throughout the year to decorate areas of the VA and play bingo with the veterans. These activities included Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and most recently Memorial Day.

VA Youth Service Project

See our brochure highlighting the great work we do at the Veterans Administration Hospital in St. Cloud. ALC Wilson received the Mayors High Five Award for this project during the Summer of 2005.

Reading Buddies

ALC-Wilson SHAP program students participate throughout the year in reading to elementary students at Talahi Elementary school in St. Cloud. Students prepare lessons prior to going over to Talahi and evaluate the success of their lessons upon returning to school. Check out this PowerPoint created by one of our students.

Potato Picking

Each fall students from the ALC participate in a unique opportunity to go out to a local potato farm and learn about the "ins and outs" of running a potato operation. Upon learning of how the farm is run the students get the opportunity to go out into one of the fields and pick potatoes. The potatoes are then transported to a food shelf in St. Cloud and donated.
