Top 10 Ceremony Honors Students

The Top Ten Reception, which honors the leading scholars at Apollo and Tech high schools, was May 26 at St. Cloud City Hall. Apollo's ten best are Megan Gorder, Molly Gorder, Alison Gray, Chelsey Hinnenkamp, Andrew Humbert, Kaci Parsons, Sarah Schmitt, Michael Schreifels, Caleb Stellmach and Kayla Stock. The top ten students at Tech are Stefan Bartell, Flannery Cunningham, Joshua Godding, Elly Jarvis, Kaashyapee Jha, Joseph Molde, Stephanie Nappa, Dominick Ormsby, Kathryn Paulson and Madina Sultanova. Thank You 2008-09 Retirees

North Students Design Mechanical Arm

Honors Technology classes at North Junior High are finishing up their Mechanical Arm capstone projects. The students designed 17 different parts on CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) software then they manufactured and assembled the device in the Construction Lab. The project was part of a year long course that focuses on incorporating math, science, and the design process in the Industrial Technology class. The hands on activities enforce the practicality of the class and prepare the students for advanced engineering coursework at the high school and college level. Szymanski Named Counselor of the Year

The Central MN School Counselors' Association had its Annual Awards Banquet April 21 at Coyote Moon, honoring Counselors and Retirees. They were honored to present Madison counselor Teresa Szymanski as the Central MN Elementary Counselor of the Year.  04.22.09

Minnesota Reading Corps

District 742 is fortunate this year to have the added tutorial support from over 20 Americorps/Minnesota Reading Corps members. The members are housed throughout the preschool and elementary schools where they work one-on-one with children and their literacy skills. ALC Students Lobby at the State Capitol

Nine students and two teachers represented District 742 alternative programs Feb. 11 at the State Capitol for MAAP STARS Legislative Day. Governor Tim Pawlenty declared Feb. 9-13 Alternative Education Week in Minnesota. The students, representing Wilson and McKinley schools, visited with Senator Tarryl Clark, and Representatives Larry Haws, Larry Hosch, Dan Severson, and Steve Gottwalt to advocate for alternative educational programs. Students from Wilson were Brady Edmond, Eddie Rakke, Chelsie Pratt, Sydney Meyer, and Anita Fagel, McKinley students were Brittany Sherer, Jameco Johnson, Cole Williamson Reeves, and Samantha Williamson Reeves. Board Reorganizes, Elects Leaders

Jerry Von Korff is the Board of Education's new chair. Von Korff was elected by fellow board members at the board's annual reorganization meeting Jan. 5 at the District Administration Office, St. Cloud. Sigrid Hedman-Dennis is vice-chair. Thank You Board Members Dorsher and Seibring

Thank you to Joanne Dorsher and Ron Seibring for their years of work on behalf of District 742's students, staff and residents. The two Board of Education members participate in their final meetings this month. Their terms end Dec. 31. The success of District 742 depends heavily upon the community service of active citizens like Dorsher and Seibring. Thank you and well done.  12.05.08

Official 2008 Operating Levy Referendum Results

On Nov. 4 voters passed Question 1 but failed to pass Question 2 and 3 of the operating referendum. Question 1 will provide $555 per pupil. The money will support teachers, student transportation services, student activities and operations. Question 2 which would have provided $160 per pupil failed. The money would have provided funding equal to Minnesota average. Question 3, which also failed, would have raised $255 per pupil. It would have supported additional student curriculum and services. Official 2008 School Board Election Results

Incumbents, Les Green and Debra Lalley will retain their seats on the Board of Education along with newcomers Cindy Harner and Bruce Hentges based on the unofficial results from the Nov. 4 general election. The new four-year terms begin in January. View the official results.  11.10.08

Educators Receive LEEA Award

Twelve District 742 teachers were honored Oct. 29 at the Annual Leadership in Educational Excellence Banquet and Awards Ceremony (LEEA). The award ceremony was sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions for its member districts. Teachers receiving awards included Janet Hainlin, Fay Bolin, Geri Swanson, Richard Larson, Michael Bakken, Nichole Abernathy, Mattea Decker, Krisi Lain, Laurie Hoff, Katie Zieglmeier, Bechy Marohl and Mary Michaud. Westwood Sixth Graders Buddy Up with Bethlehem Preschoolers

Westwood Elementary sixth grade students will continue their partnership with Bethlehem Preschool. Each sixth grader is paired with a preschool child and magical relationships develop. They meet four times throughout the year. The sixth graders model and teach social skills, practice reading skills such as fluency and retelling, and design masterpiece projects such as creatively carved pumpkins in October and architecturally sound Gingerbread houses in December.  10.21.08

Tech Athletic Hall of Fame Honors 16

Sixteen women and men joined Tech High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 10. Among the honored were Bruce Hentges, athlete, coach, activities director and administrator; Michelle Lechner, standout athlete in tennis, basketball and softball; and Bill Ritchie, long-time coach. ALC West Students Accept Challenge

National Learn and Serve week was Oct. 6-12. Students Abbie and Brittany kicked off the National Learn and Serve Challenge by presenting the governor's proclamation to ALC West Director Mark Lindquist. Click here to view the picture. ALC West is implementing Kids Voting USA, a service-learning project that is designed to motivate and inform young adult voters. 10.13.08

ALC Celebrates Their 4000th Graduation

The St. Cloud Area Learning Center (ALC) recently celebrated their 4000th graduation at the McKinley Education Center's Celebration of Excellence event on Sept. 25. ALC Director Mark Lindquist presented an Apollo High School Diploma to Ryan Blommer who finished his high school graduation requirements this summer through the ALC Pace Program and Youthbuild. Approximately two dozen ALC Wilson students helped the city and, more specifically, their northside neighborhood Sept. 19. The city water works engineer came to the school and gave a talk about the importance of keeping the water, particularly the Mississippi, clean. He also covered how the city water systems and waste management works, as well as the types and descriptions of jobs in his field. Students went out as a group and used stencils to paint reminders by the storm drains that whatever goes in the drains goes directly into the river. They had a fabulous time, and helped out the city and the Hester Park Neighborhood. Read the article in that was put into the neighborhood newsletter. To meet the requirements of the Minnesota Department of Education, the Student Services/Special Education Department surveyed general and special education staff as well as the families of children who received special education. District 742 Advanced Placement Program

Advanced Placement (AP) is an internationally recognized program that provides opportunities for students to experience college-level academics while enrolled in high school. Students are able to earn college credit for an AP course if they pass the exam given in the spring. Students in District 742 have a wide variety of AP choices. Apollo's Center 4 Recycling Taking Computers

Apollo High School's Center 4 Recycling started in the fall of 2007 as a cooperative effort between Technology Education and Special Education programs. The goal is to provide a work experience setting in which students with disabilities learn a variety of vocational and technical skills including work place safety and efficiency, proper use of tools and the science of recycling.
