Our One-Room School
Welcome to the Meyer School House, located eight miles south of
St. Cloud, Minnesota, on County Road 7.
This one-room school house was used at the turn of the century
as a school for local children in grades one through eight. Before
1917, half the classes were taught in German because 90 percent
of the local community spoke German. Upon completion of the eighth
grade, students could attend high school in either Kimball or St.
Cloud. To meet the demands of farm life, school was in session from
the middle of October to the middle of April. Some children traveled
many miles on foot to attend school during the harsh Minnesota winters.
Today, school children of District 742 visit this school of the
past and learn how children their age spent school days many years
ago. Teachers try to simulate an actual school day of the early
1900's. Many students dress in pioneer costumes, use tablets instead
of paper, pack sack lunches, drink lemonade from a jar, recite math
facts and make butter.
Our one-room school house is something to be proud of. It gives
us a chance to see how life might have been at one time. One teacher
said..."what better place to have a history lesson, than in
a place where time has stood still!"
