How do I make a referral?

A parent or guardian can call 252-0415 or e-mail us at ecassessment@isd742.org. With parental permission, referrals can be made by professionals such as a physician, public health nurse, daycare provider or preschool teacher.

How do you determine which assessments are to be completed?

Our decisions are based on information gathered from parents and other sources, such as teachers, doctors and early childhood screenings.

What happens if my child qualifies for special education services?

We write an individualized plan of action to address your child's specific needs. The plan is developed with input from parents and professionals who have information about your child.

Who completes the assessments?

Our team includes a child development specialist, speech/language pathologist, school social worker, school psychologist, occupational therapist and a physical therapist. Team members, and other professionals, join the process depending upon your child's needs.

What happens during an assessment?

Professionals evaluate your child's skill level in the developmental areas where there are concerns. Many of the assessments seem as though we are playing games with your child. In fact, we are observing and documenting strengths and weaknesses.

What sounds should my child make at age 3? Age 4? Age 5?

Sound/speech development varies from child to child, but our Speech Sound Development Chart describes typical ages for acquiring sounds.

Are there charges for evaluating or providing services for my child?

No. Costs are covered by the public school system.

Is the Early Childhood Assessment Team the same as Early Childhood Screening?

No. Early Childhood Screening is a program based at our Roosevelt Early Childhood Center. It identifies children who may need to be assessed by our team.

Once a referral is made, how long before I am contacted?

A team member will contact you within two weeks of receiving a referral. See our Assessment page for details.

What about confidentiality?

Team members are not allowed to talk to outside persons or agencies without a signed release from a parent(s). Information we collect about your child remains in the child's cumulative school file. Access to this file is limited. In addition, our professional code of conduct obligates us to provide confidentiality.
